Dear IHM, you're so right. People want a seedhi saadi gai so they can bully and manipulate them. But is that what the bahu wants? Why does she not have a voice? Parents are to blame here. One should bring up girls and boys with no gender stereotypes. Both have to pitch in with housework, both have to make a career and both need good nourighing food, rest, clothes, education and freedom to think, act and speak.

Many parents do wish to give their girls the freedom to do what they want, but the pressure from relatives and friends is too hot to handle and they succumb.

I agree with Atheist Indian. Few illiterate and uneducated people know something is wrong with them till the late stages. This can also happen with the educated. But my personal experience shows that treatment towards the poor is extremely bad in Govt Hospitals. My maid had to go through a horrendous experience till I intervened. With my intervention, the maid was immediately given medical attention. Why should the poor and illiterate have to depend on the educated to bail them (...)

Such a bleak life for the Haryanavi women! They should all be helped to move out of the rotten place to start life afresh. Someone please help them escape this hellhole and give them a platform to live, grow and support themselves.

Absolutely IHM, our privacy is important to us. Many a times I have been told that only people who have done some grave wrong would want to hide facts. I asked them "why do we have doors in our toilets?"

Dear Not Indian Enough, you are better off not being Indian enough because if you were, you would have been married off long back into a patriarchal family. In the Indian society anyone's business is everyone's business. People here can rest in peace only when they know you are married. The next question that follows after this is "how many kids?". You wait some more time and other personal questions will follow. All this is part of being Indian. It is difficult to find an India(...)

The key is not to make haste. Getting to know the person is the most important aspect. For this lots of time and effort should be invested. There are so many modes of communication..internet, phone, chat and meeting, Visiting each other at their home will give one a better idea about their lifestyle and attitudes. In Gujarat generally people first get engaged and the marriage takes place a few years later. This period is used to get to know each other. The prospective bride and g(...)

Will the husband agree to move out with his wife and live separately? He seems to think these are insignificant adjustments.
