Movie Review – The Avengers

Scripted and directed by Joss Whedon, The Avengers is the sixth installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. The flick has been in the news for over two years for its action, special effects and the galaxy of stars like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johannson, Jeremy Renner, Samuel Jackson etc. Does it work?
Loki (Tom Hiddleston), an exiled Norse God takes the Tesseract, a source of high energy potential and uses his powers to control the minds of Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Dr. Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard). He is on a mission to destory the Earth. Nick Fury (Samuel Jackson), director of the peacekeeping organization SHIELD recruits Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Captain America (Chris Evans) to form the Avengers and stop Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) brother, Loki from destroying the planet. They are ably supported by Black Widow (Scarlett Johannson). The rest of the movie deals with how they manage to save the Earth from Loki and his Chitauri Fleet.
Its a usual superhero flick where the good guys save the world from the bad ones. But the film promises good special effects and awesome action. And it delivers on both counts pretty flawlessly. I would say that 3D is pretty much abused these days. But the 3D technology does take this one to an altogether fantastic level. Though the movie starts slow with a background of all the characters, it starts to gain speed somewhere in the middle when the team begin their plan to tackle Loki.
Bringing six superheroes together is quite a task. But Joss Whedon effectively captures the problems, difficulties, issues between them and how they go on to save the world. The dialogues are pretty well written. And there are a number of places where you would whistle, clap or even laugh your guts out. For those who haven’t see any of the Marvel Comics flicks, don’t worry. Joss draws a character sketch of each superhero for the viewer to get upto speed with the happenings.
Downsides? Yes. There are a few parts towards the end which seem to be inspired from the Transformers. The flick also does get a bit slow at times as well. But these are just a couple of points in an otherwise amazing movie.
Among the performances, Robert Downey Jr. stands out with his fantastic portrayal of the Iron Man. He doesn’t act. But instead he just ends up saying all his dialogues with a straight face. But even that straight face makes you laugh, clap and enjoy. That’s what an entertainer can do. Scarlett Johannson looks hot and does complete justice to her portrayal of the Black Widow. Mark Ruffalo stays with you as Hulk once the movie ends. His smashing of Loki towards the end is a scene to watch out for! Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, Samuel Jackson and Chris Hemsworth are competent. Gwyneth Paltrow is there for two scenes.
If you are a lover of action, fantasy and great special effects, go for this one!
